Following lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries will mark their first year on the car in 2023.

On December 21, Fu Neng Technology released news that the company recently received Jiangling Group "agreed to carry out the preliminary research work on the EV3 model of sodium ion battery adaptation" notice. According to the customer's production and sales plan, the application of sodium ion products will be marketed in 2023.

Jiangling Group new energy EV3 model is the current market in the sale of pure electric vehicles "easy to EV3 - small radar". The car has a range of 301km in CLTC conditions and a price range of 7.98 yuan to 84,800 yuan.

In December, Fu Neng Technology said in a conference call, the company has sent samples of sodium ion batteries to some long-term cooperation with the car companies, mainly A0 class models; The company is also working to revamp and increase production of sodium batteries, and will ship some products next year.

In addition to Jiangling New Energy, which is set to launch a sodium-ion battery model next year, BYD plans to mass-produce sodium-ion batteries in the second quarter of 2023 for Qin EV, Dolphin and Seagulls, a new model, according to Late AUTO. The Seagull is a small A0-class sedan that BYD will launch next year, priced between 80,000 yuan and 100,000 yuan. Byd could be the first company in the world to put sodium-ion batteries in cars, the report said.

As early as at the end of July 2021, Ningde Times released the first generation of sodium ion batteries, after which this battery technology route became the focus of attention. Ningde announced at the time that sodium-ion batteries would form a basic industrial chain by 2023.

Lithium-ion batteries, now commonly used in electric vehicles, have risen in price in recent years due to soaring prices of raw materials upstream, prompting complaints from downstream carmakers. Compared with lithium batteries, sodium-ion batteries require abundant sodium resources in raw materials and are unrestricted and easy to exploit, so sodium-ion batteries have significant cost advantages.

But the biggest drawback of sodium-ion batteries is their energy density, which determines the range of electric cars, an important metric. In addition, in the initial stage of sodium battery industrialization, its cost advantage can not be highlighted. According to the data, the current production cost of sodium-ion batteries is about 0.9 yuan per Wh, which is comparable to lithium iron phosphate batteries. As capacity is expanded, its costs are expected to fall by around 50%.

It is estimated that the market of sodium battery will reach 88GWh in 2026, corresponding to the output value of 48.4 billion yuan. In essence, sodium battery is a more price-sensitive application scenario to replace lithium iron phosphate battery. In the field of household storage /UPS/5G base station, sodium battery can enter and form a certain penetration; In the field of two-wheelers, sodium batteries are expected to occupy a larger share; In the passenger car sector, sodium batteries are expected to penetrate quickly in the cost-sensitive A00/A0 class. Sodium batteries are expected to be produced in small batches in 2023, and the industry will usher in a large scale cost reduction in 2024.
