According to a report on the website of Spanish daily La Publique on May 3, the battery sector is dominated by Asia, with all of the top 10 manufacturers coming from the region.
The electric car battery business is growing, and while the European Union is the region investing the most in the transition to electric vehicles, the top 10 battery makers are all Asian companies, the report said.
According to a report released by the SNE Research Center in Korea, the global battery load for electric vehicles reached 95.1 gigawatt hours (GWh) in the first quarter of 2022, up 93.3% year on year. Nearly doubled compared with the first quarter of last year, despite supply chain difficulties, rising raw material prices and the threat of a severe shortage of batteries.
Ningde Times continues to firmly dominate the global electric vehicle battery market. Ningde Times loaded 33.3GWh of vehicles in the first quarter, with a market share of 35 percent, the report said. In fact, Ningde Times consolidated its leading position, increasing its market share by 0.6 percentage points from the 34.4 percent recorded at the end of February.
LG New Energy ranked second with 15.1GWh in the first quarter and 15.9 percent of the market.
Byd followed with 10.5GWh and 11.1 percent market share. We should note that in addition to batteries, BYD also makes electric buses and trucks, electric bicycles and stationary batteries for homes and industrial facilities.
Panasonic is the fourth largest manufacturer so far in 2022, with 9.4GWh loaded and 9.9% market share (down slightly from 10.8% in February). Panasonic supplies most of its batteries to Tesla and has a longstanding relationship with the company, though it also has other important partners such as Toyota.
Meanwhile, SK On (wholly owned by SK Innovation) supplied 6.3GWh and ranked fifth with 6.6 percent market share. Avic Lithium Power, a Chinese company, ranked sixth with 4.2GWh, or 4.4 percent. The next three companies in the top 10 are also Chinese: Guoxuan High-tech, Beehive Energy and Ewether.
Here's a list of the leading battery manufacturers for 2022, in order from most to least loaded:
