International market
Tesla: The only pet Panasonic battery
Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk has been told several times to visit Samsung and LG Chem in terms of battery suppliers, no substantial progress has been made so far. The popular Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model S, all use Panasonic batteries.
Due to Tesla's leading position in the global research and development and sales of electric vehicle technology, the batteries supplied by Panasonic specifically for Tesla have also become a rhythmic benchmark in the field of power batteries. In China, for example, Contemporary Ampris Technology Co. Ltd. and BYD Co. Ltd. are both examples of square-shell batteries. However, since Panasonic supplied 18,650 cylinder batteries to Tesla earlier, domestic cylinder batteries have become popular and even mainstream. At the beginning of this year, Tesla and Panasonic jointly announced the mass production of 21,700 batteries, and domestic companies quickly followed suit to develop and put 21,700 batteries into production. So who's behind the Leaf's global expansion? The answer is an AESC unfamiliar to domestic consumers. AESC is a joint venture between Nissan and NEC established in July 2021 to manufacture lithium battery packs, modules and lithium battery packs. Then came the first plant, producing lithium manganate batteries for Nissan's electric cars and hybrids.
While LG Chem dominates the Chinese market, LG Chem is doing well in the international market. In the international market, LG Chem has many partner automakers such as GM, Renault, Ford, Volvo and Nissan. According to real lithium research statistics, LG Chem shipped 5.3GWh in the first 10 months of the year, ranking fourth in the world after China Contemporary Ampres Technology Co LTD and BYD. PEVE stands for Primearth EV Energy Company, a new energy company jointly invested by Toyota and Panasonic. It mainly develops batteries and power management systems for Toyota's hybrid and electric vehicles, as well as lithium batteries in addition to lead-acid and NIMh batteries. It is understood that the new Toyota Prius PHEV will be powered by "all-new" lithium batteries.
PEVE accounts for 85% of the global nickel-metal hydride battery market share for hybrid vehicles. Currently, PEVE's nickel-metal hydride batteries are used in Toyota's plug-in hybrid and regular hybrid models. In China, the hybrid cars of FAW Pentium, GM Lacrosse and other brands also use NIMH batteries, but the batteries are mainly purchased from abroad, and the NIMH batteries used in domestic cars are still in the stage of research and development.

Although the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance uses different battery suppliers, they all do well in terms of new energy vehicle sales: from January to October, the Nissan Leaf ranked second globally with 74,000 units, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV ranked ninth with 33,000 units, and the Renault ZOE ranked 13th with 29,000 units.
BMW: Battery suppliers include Samsung SDI and Contemporary Ampres Technologies LTD.
At present, BMW has reached cooperation agreements with China's Contemporary Amprius Technology Co LTD and South Korea's Samsung SDI. The two companies supply BMW with custom battery packs.
